While we were looking for appropriate readings for our wedding, we came across Philippians 4, and we knew right away that we'd found our second reading. It has since become my favorite passage, and the one I fall back on consistently. I'm grateful for it, especially when I need the reminder to rejoice, which unfortunately is often! Full of beauty and joy, it gives me just what I need most days.
Rejoice in the Lord always.
I shall say it again: rejoice!
Your kindness should be known to all.
The Lord is near.
Have no anxiety at all, but in everything,
by prayer and petition,
with thanksgiving,
make your requests known to God.
Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding
will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally, brothers, whatever is true,
whatever is honorable, whatever is just,
whatever is pure, whatever is lovely,
whatever is gracious,
if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise,
think about these things.
Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me.
then the God of peace will be with you.
Phil 4:4-9
About six years ago I sponsored a friend in the RCIA process of entering the Catholic church. As a gift after being received into the church, she gave me a beautiful mug with a verse from this passage on it. Even the kids know it's my favorite mug, and they let any guest at our house know not to use it!
